Thanks to an influx of travellers from all over Europe, Riga Old Town caters to all kinds of drinking habits. However, if you prefer a more local take on boozing, you should probably leave the heart of the city behind. But, if you’re not sure where to begin – don’t worry! Here, I’ve mapped the best drinking holes all over town, so now you don’t have to.
Located at the bottom end of Miera Iela – Riga’s hipster hotpot – this laid-back boozer is a favourite among locals. Taka offers a good selection of beer, including some local varieties. And, if you’re not a beer buff, the venue boasts knowledgeable staff who can help you select one to suit your tastes.
Taka, Miera iela 10, Centra rajons, Rīga.
As the flagship bar of a local craft beer brewery, it’s not really a surprise that Labietis is a haven for every kind of ale lover. With a rotating line-up of brews, you’re sure to find something perfectly palatable behind the bar. And, if you’re unsure, just ask.
The pub is located in a quiet courtyard by two other drinking establishments and features an outside wooden porch area on which your beer can be consumed come rain or shine.
Labietis, Aristida Briāna iela 9A2, Centra rajons, Rīga.
Kanepes Kultūras Centrs
Situated in an abandoned building, this relaxed venue is definitely more shabby than chic. But, nevertheless, it pulls in the cool crowd. And, it turns out, the setting has a long association with the bohemian. That’s because it once housed the Art Academy of Latvia.
Today, Kanepes Kultūras Centrs is still known for its artistic endeavours including cinema and gig nights. However, it’s also a nice place to grab a beer and hang out in its bunting-strewn courtyard.
Kanepes Kultūras Centrs, Skolas iela 15, Centra rajons, Rīga.
Kalnciema Street Market
This place may seem a little out of the way to the rest of Riga (considering its on the opposite side of the river to most of the city) but it’s well worth the visit. The venue plays host to number of events each year. There’s concerts, farmers’ markets, movie nights and mini festivals always popping up in the quaint courtyard that’s surrounded by 120-year-old wooden huts. Just check the Kalnciema Street Market calendar before your visit.
Kalnciema Street Market, Kalnciema iela 35, Zemgales priekšpilsēta, Rīga.
Autentika sprang up in an abandoned brewery in 2016. And, since then, it has established itself as one of Riga’s top hipster hangouts. At weekends, you can find DJ sets inside and gigs and festivals outside. For full listings of what’s going on and when, check out the venue’s Facebook page.
Autentika, Bruņinieku iela 2, Centra rajons, Rīga.
Located atop of Galerija Riga – one of the fanciest shopping centres in town – Terrace Riga offers a stunning 360 panorama of the capital. It boasts a casual atmosphere with a slightly upmarket crowd. However, cocktails are still relatively affordable. As for the view, well that’s priceless.
